How to find new music by mood

· 4 min read

Use a mood, a song you love, and SongScroll’s discovery dial to find fresh music that fits the feeling you want.

Finding new music by mood is more useful than starting with a genre. Sometimes you want something dreamy, sometimes something energetic, and sometimes you want a song that feels like the one already stuck in your head. The trick is to start with the feeling, then decide how far you want to explore.

SongScroll is built for that kind of discovery. You can choose a vibe, begin with an artist or song, and set the discovery dial from Familiar to Insane. That gives you a say in whether the next track feels comfortably recognizable or genuinely unexpected.

Start with the feeling

Open the Vibes tab and choose a mood such as Chill or Dreamy. SongScroll surfaces a grid of songs that match the feeling, with fresh tracks selected for that mood rather than simply repeating your usual listening pattern.

A mood is a useful starting point because it leaves room for different genres and artists. A dreamy song might be electronic, acoustic, pop, or something harder to classify. If the track has the right atmosphere, it belongs in the search.

Use a song as your shortcut

When you find one track that captures the mood, tap into its vibe. SongScroll builds a grid of more songs with a similar feel. Think of it as turning one promising discovery into a wider path: the same energy, a related mood, and more artists to explore.

This is especially helpful when you know the feeling you want but do not know the name of the genre. Start with the song that gets closest, then follow the vibe instead of trying to describe it with the perfect search term.

Set how far you want to wander

The discovery dial controls the distance from what you already know. You decide whether the session should stay near familiar artists or reach further into new territory.

Familiar

Choose Familiar when you want a gentle extension of your current taste. The session focuses mostly on artists you already love, with the occasional fresh face. It is a good setting for finding something new without changing the atmosphere too much.

Balanced

Balanced gives you an even mix of comfortable picks and tracks worth a first listen. Use it when you want discovery, but still want a clear connection to the music you already enjoy.

Adventurous

Move to Adventurous when you want similar artists and music that is further outside your usual rotation. This is a useful middle ground for a mood you know well, when you are ready to hear a different interpretation of it.

Insane

Insane is for a session built around constant new music. It reaches for deep cuts and artists further away from your starting point. Choose it when the goal is not just to find another version of what you already like, but to see where the feeling can lead.

You can change the setting whenever the session starts to feel too safe or too strange. The dial is there so you can steer, not so a hidden system decides how adventurous you should be.

Build a mood-based discovery session

Try this simple routine:

  1. Pick the mood that matches what you want to hear right now.
  2. Choose a seed artist you already trust, or start from a song that captures the feeling.
  3. Begin on Balanced if you want a mix of familiar and fresh music.
  4. Save the tracks that work and skip the ones that do not.
  5. Move toward Adventurous or Insane when the results feel too predictable.
  6. Open a favourite track’s vibe to follow its mood into another group of songs.

Your saved tracks and skips help SongScroll refine each vibe. That means you can treat discovery as an active conversation: keep the songs that fit, pass on the ones that miss, and adjust the dial when you want a different distance.

You do not need to know exactly what you are looking for before you begin. A feeling is enough. The point is to make the search flexible while keeping the decision in your hands.

Preview first, then choose where to play

You can browse 30-second previews as soon as you open the app, without signing up. When a track earns a longer listen, choose where to play it through Apple Music, YouTube, or Spotify. Full-song playback depends on the connected service and any subscription it requires.

That makes it easy to explore without committing to every recommendation. Preview a track, decide whether it belongs in the mood, and keep moving until something genuinely catches you.

Make the next session different

A good mood-based discovery session should not end with one song. Open that song’s vibe, try a higher discovery setting, or start again with a different seed artist. The same mood can lead somewhere new each time because you control both the starting point and the distance.

Start with a feeling. Then take the wheel.
